Dry Needling For TMJ Disorders
Is TMJ Pain Keeping You Awake At Night?
Do You Want To Stop Eating Baby Food And Sleeping In A Nightguard?
Dry Needling fixes the root cause and helps you sleep through the night again.
Eliminate Pain And Get Your Life Back
If you have dysfunction in your TMJ joint, the cause of your pain could be inflammation in the muscles we chew with and problems with the articular disc and muscle joint.
Dry Needling helps resolve the root cause and eliminates TMJ pain… for good. Then, you can eat apples, baguettes, and peanut brittle again and sleep soundly right through the night.
Some of the symptoms associated with this type of inflammation include earaches, popping/clicking sounds, headaches, and dull throbbing pain. Of course, to relieve the pain, you could increase your intake of soft foods that require less mastication, but who wants to live like that, right?
One of the most effective treatments for TMJ pain and TMJ disorders – that relaxes your muscles of mastication and provides long-lasting relief is Dry Needling. At TMJ Therapy of Atlanta, we’re delighted to offer this treatment to select patients we deem suitable candidates.

Pin-Point Accuracy For Long-Lasting Pain Relief
Before deciding where to place the dry needles, we examine your cervical spine and your TMJ symptoms – looking for areas of tenderness and reduced range of motion/muscle strength. We evaluate your cervical spine because it plays a vital role in TMJ functioning. For example, your upper cervical spinal area can affect the position of your jaw when you’re sitting down and impair chewing.
Dry Needling involves inserting fine needles into “trigger points” in the connective tissue in and around the jaw to help reduce “hypertonicity,” pain, and inflammation. In simple terms, it helps the muscles relax and decreases pain.
For TMJ pain, we may insert needles directly into the muscles of mastication, including the temporalis, pterygoids, masseter, and the TMJ joint capsule.
- The temporalis is responsible for the opening and closing of the mouth.
- The lateral pterygoid assists in moving the jawbone forward.
- The masseter helps in the chewing motion and moves the jawbone up.
We may also insert them into your suboccipital muscles in your upper neck. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, we may decide to hook the needles up to an electrical stimulation unit to break the tissues down even more.
Studies show that dry Needling helps in improving jaw functionality and reducing pain. It is an integral part of therapy treatment if you have severe TMJ issues that do not respond to standard therapies.
