TMJ Massage Can Help.

Stress-relieving Massage for TMJ Pain, Headaches And Bruxism (Teeth-Grinding)

If you have an issue with your temporomandibular (TMJ) joint, you know it can be excruciating and uncomfortable. But the pain and disruption it causes in your life also cause a great deal of stress and anxiety, which becomes a vicious circle because stress exacerbates the symptoms of TMJ disorders.

A TMJ medical massage is a specialist head, neck, and jaw massage (a bit like trigger point therapy but for TMJ). Sometimes, we include the neck and cervical spine area if we believe they may be the root cause of the pain. Initially, however, we tend to focus on alleviating the pain and discomfort in your masseter muscle – the muscle in your upper cheekbone that helps connect and control your lower jaw that is commonly the trigger point of tension and the cause of your TMJ pain.

One of the most relaxing and effective treatments for TMJ pain and TMJ disorders – that provides both intense relaxation and practical pain relief, is TMJ Massage. At TMJ Therapy of Atlanta, we’re delighted to offer this treatment to select patients we deem suitable candidates.

The Relaxing Cure For TMJ Pain, Tinnitus And Headaches

Often, TMJ pain is not a standalone physical condition. Instead, it results from stress causing tension and dysfunction in the jaw joint. That’s why TMJ massage on the head and jaw region is an excellent way to de-stress and relieve anxiety – with the added benefit of relieving TMJ pain.

Many of us unwittingly clench our teeth together when we feel stress. In the long term, this can cause toothache. In addition, the masseter muscle in the jaw has trigger points that frequently lead to sharp pain in the lower molars (teeth). Unfortunately, your dentist cannot treat this condition because it’s not related to the teeth. Instead, a TMJ massage can help with pain relief.

Some people suffer from a medical condition called Bruxism or teeth clenching. It may become habitual that you do it when you’re asleep. Hence, it is known as “Sleep Bruxism” and leads to sleep disturbance and deprivation, facial and TMJ pain, and damage to the teeth. Studies suggest that getting TMJ massages can alleviate the pain and help prevent teeth grinding.

Having chronic tension in your TM joint can also lead to an auditory distortion and ringing in your ears (tinnitus), along with dizziness. Why? Well, the muscles we use to chew (masticate) are near the middle ear muscles. There are also links between your jaw ligaments and the “Tympanum” in the middle ear. TMJ massage releases the stress within these ligaments and muscles and can eliminate tinnitus and dizziness.
